Search Composition: Advanced Searching

In addition to correct search composition and using quotes, there are a few other techniques that you can use to put together your search criteria:

  1. Using the AND keyword

When you use the AND keyword, you are telling the search engine to only return documents which contain both of the words or phrases that you specified.

For example, if we are looking for soccer teams in Arizona, we might search for

This would eliminate any results that contain only the phrase soccer team or only the word arizona. As you see, searching with the word AND will give you a relatively smaller set of results.

Of course, you can include as many "AND's" in your search as you want; for example, you could have searched for

  2. Using the OR keyword

When you use the OR keyword between two words, the search engine will return results that contain either of the words or both.

For example, if we search for

we will find pages that contain the word tigers, pages that contain the word lions, and pages that contain both words: lions and tigers. As you can imagine, more results would be returned than if we had searched for just the term

    or just the term

Of course, you can include as many "OR's" in your search as you want; for example, you could have searched for

  3. Using the plus (+) and minus (-) symbols: You can use the plus (+) and minus (-) symbols to specify that a word must be in the results that are returned, or that no results should be included which contain a given word.

Here are some examples of searching with the plus (+) symbol:
